Ranch and farm vacations don't fit into any normal category. In fact they are a category in their own rights. They are so diverese and offer something for everyone. Some are very basic and rustic, others so luxurios that they offer fly-in / fly-out or luxurios airport transfer shuttle services.
We're classifying them in three main categories: working ranches, guest / dude ranches and luxury ranch resorts.
While working ranches raise livestock and crops, guests have become a major part of their operations. As a guest at a working ranch you can become a real cowboy / cowgirl, learning to drive and doctoring cattle, brand and rope steers, eating round a camp fire and sleeping under the stars. Due to the nature of working ranches the chors carried out are dependend of the seasons. You're not required to work but you may and it's definitely an experience you will remember a long time. Accommodation usually is very basic and the best times for a stay at a working ranch is from June to late fall. If you are specially interested in cattle or herd round-ups you should book early and contact your desired ranch as soon as possible. Usually these activities sell very quick and you might have to book them a year ahead.

The differences between dude ranches and guest ranches are usually more by region and less in what is offered. While Canadian ranches usually use the term guest ranch the ranches in the United States are usually called dude ranches.
Horseback riding is always a big thing, and the ranches are usually gearted to catering for a wide variety of interests and ideal for those people who want a fully scheduled vacation. Fully weekly programmes of western activities is usually included in your holiday price - such as wild west shows, rodeo visits, square dances, barbecues and a host of sports and outdoor activities are provided along with cabins or lodge rooms. When it comes to riding, abilities may range from novice to experienced riders at most dude ranches making this option a real family vacation. Luxury resort ranches are as varied in their locations as they are in what they have to offer. Some emphasize their luxurious cabins, meals and wine list placing riding as a secondary activity. Others may offer the full "western experience" in delightfully decorated log cabins with gourmet cuisine, a great and varied riding programme no matter what level of rider you are.
In addition there is a full weekly schedule of activities set around the riding and meal times plus numerous off ranch activities such as rafting, golf or ballooning. Many resort ranches encourage children with their excellent summer Counsellor prorammes giving parents the chance to relax. Needless to say, the kids never get bored!
